Additions to a House in Wesley Heights, Washington, DC

Several modifications and additions were made to a three-bedroom house in a wooded residential neighborhood. These were:
- replacing the existing painted shingles with natural-pigmented stucco and adding several new openings
- adding pergola elements on the street (north) facade at the front door and living room window, and realigning the front walk
- adding a sitting room with clerestory on the west side of the house overlooking the surrounding landscape
- adding a deck and stair on the rear (south) facade connecting the new sitting room and deck to the garden below.
The modifications improve the connection of the house to the front and rear gardens which are separated by a steep slope. Several natural-finish materials (natural-pigmented stucco, mahogany exterior decking, and oak plank flooring) were carefully selected and integrated with interior and exterior painted elements (pergola, windows, doors, trim and handrails).
These complementary materials unify the composition and connect the interior rooms (new and existing), furnishings, and sculptural objects with the exterior building elements and the surrounding woody landscape.
