House in Potomac, Maryland

The clients requested a house in the Regency style. Essentially a new house (7,000 square feet) this building incorporates and expands an earlier house built in 1980. The project began by assembling the team of the interior decorator - Sam Morrow of Morrow Interiors, the architect and the landscape architect - Amy Mills of DCA Landscape to achieve a fully integrated design of house and landscape.

- The client's program required several small expansions of the ground floor rooms through bay window additions plus the addition of a private study for Mr. Burman on the north side of the house. Several steel and glass bay window additions were added to expand the major ground floor rooms - dining room, living room, and breakfast room. All the other rooms of the ground floor were significantly altered - a two story entrance hall was created out of several smaller spaces, the library was enlarged, the kitchen and service entry including the laundry was completely redesigned. The second floor renovations included an enlarged master suite with significant attention to the master bath and dressing areas plus renovations to the other two guest bedroom suites. The lower level of the house was made accessible from the garden through a loggia and a large entertaining room 17' by 50' with billiard table, home theater, full service bar/kitchen was created out of unused storage space. The house was completely resurfaced with portland cement plaster or stucco finish.

-The surrounding landscape has been completely redesigned as an integral part of the new house with the surrounding garden terraces redesigned to be more in keeping with the style of the house. Careful positioning of strategic shade trees, specimen plantings, andsurrounding masonry wall enclosures and evergreen hedges have contributed to the garden's privacy. The front driveway was redesigned to include a brick paved and cobbled formal entry court.

- A new detached two car garage with studio apartment above was set off to the side of the house.
The additions and modifications to the house and landscape have been carefully integrated through the use of French doors and garden terraces.
